Somerset Hills YMCA Supports Families in Need Through Baby Essentials Drive

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – Somerset Hills YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, partnered with Moms Helping Moms Foundation (MHM) to host a diaper and baby essentials drive last month. MHM, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential baby supplies to families facing financial hardships, aiming to alleviate childhood poverty by ensuring every baby has access to the necessities for a healthy start in life.

“In learning, on average, babies require 12 diapers a day, and when purchased individually, that can add up to $70-$80 a month for a family, our initiative in May was crucial to supporting vulnerable women and families,” shares Eddie Norgard, Branch Associate Executive Director. “At the Y, we are committed to inclusivity and leveraging our resources to address social disparities, particularly in youth development.”

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we collected hundreds of dollars’ worth of baby essentials to be distributed to families in need through MHM’s Healthy Start for Babies Program, which distributes critical essentials to over 100,000 individuals per year, including more than one million diapers annually. Essentials include diapers, wipes, clothing, shoes, blankets, hygiene products, pack-n-plays, strollers, and more.

Allison Christian along with the MHM Team, emphasized, “Not only do they [donation drives] bring in much needed supplies, but they also help raise awareness in our community about diaper need and period poverty. The Y’s donations are an investment in strengthening families and help to alleviate caregiver stress, ease financial strain, and provide the supplies families need to keep their children and themselves healthy. We could not do the work we do without the Y.”

The Y believes in the power of collaboration and unity and welcomes partnerships with businesses, organizations, and community members who share a vision for building stronger communities.
